Large bank frauds surge again, public sector banks lead losses

India's banking sector is grappling with a resurgence in high-value fraud cases, reversing a period of relative stability and raising fresh concerns about credit risk management practices. Public sector banks have emerged as the most vulnerable institutions, bearing the brunt of substantial fraud-related losses across consecutive fiscal years.

According to available data, frauds linked to advances and credit facilities have dominated the fraud landscape, consistently accounting for more than 80 per cent of total fraud amounts recorded annually since fiscal year 2019. This concentration underscores persistent vulnerabilities in loan underwriting, monitoring and recovery mechanisms within the banking system.

The renewed spike in major fraud cases comes as lenders navigate elevated credit risks in an increasingly complex economic environment. Industry observers point to factors including lapses in due diligence, inadequate collateral verification, and delays in detecting irregularities as contributing to the fraud surge.

Public sector banks, which command a significant share of India's lending portfolio, face particular scrutiny as they manage both commercial pressures and developmental objectives. Regulators have intensified oversight measures, but the persistence of large-value frauds suggests that strengthening internal controls and forensic capabilities remains critical across the banking system.
