The Las Vegas Valley has emerged as a model for water conservation in arid regions, having successfully removed extensive grass lawns and replaced them with water-efficient alternatives. The conversion of 250 million square feet of turf has resulted in the conservation of approximately 203 billion gallons of water, a significant achievement in a region facing persistent drought conditions.

However, environmental researchers have identified an unintended consequence of the large-scale lawn removal programme. Summer land-surface temperatures in the valley have increased by approximately 20 degrees Celsius in affected areas, creating a potential urban heat island effect that raises fresh challenges for residents and city planners.

In response to the temperature surge, local water agencies have adjusted their approach to drought management. New strategies now emphasize the planting of shade trees alongside water-efficient landscaping alternatives, which aim to provide cooling benefits while maintaining water conservation gains. Fresh guidelines have also been introduced to prevent the installation of grass in residential yards, codifying the shift away from traditional lawns.

The Las Vegas experience highlights the complex trade-offs inherent in addressing water scarcity in desert regions. While the removal of lawns has delivered substantial environmental benefits in terms of conservation, planners must now balance water savings with the need to mitigate rising temperatures that could affect public health and quality of life.
