MANILA — ACT Teachers party-list Representative Antonio Tinio on Sunday issued a sharp rebuke of the arrest of veteran journalist Philip Lustre Jr., describing the detention as part of a broader pattern targeting members of the press.
Tinio characterized the action as "an alarming escalation in the weaponization of cyberlibel against journalists," raising concerns about the application of the country's cyberlibel statute as a tool to intimidate and silence media workers.
The arrest has reignited debate over press freedom in the Philippines and the use of criminal law to constrain journalistic work. Rights advocates have previously warned that cyberlibel provisions can be exploited to prosecute journalists whose reporting touches on sensitive issues or challenges powerful interests.
Lustre, whose career spans decades of reporting on Philippine politics and society, is among several journalists who have faced legal jeopardy in recent years amid broader concerns about the media environment in the Southeast Asian nation.
