Lawmaker Slams Maynilad Over Service Quality Despite Billion-Peso Earnings

Las Piñas Representative Mark Anthony Santos issued a statement Thursday targeting Maynilad Water Services Inc., accusing the water concessionaire of inadequate service delivery while maintaining high profitability. Santos argued that consumers grow increasingly frustrated with the company's pattern of citing various reasons for service failures without achieving meaningful improvements.

The lawmaker pointed out that Maynilad's substantial annual earnings—reportedly in the billions of pesos—should translate into better service quality for consumers across its franchise area. Santos contended that the company's explanations for operational shortcomings ring hollow when weighed against its financial capacity to address infrastructure and service issues.

The criticism reflects broader dissatisfaction among Metro Manila residents regarding water service quality. Consumers have repeatedly complained about low pressure, water interruptions, and other service disruptions affecting households and businesses in Maynilad's service zone.

Maynilad operates under a concession agreement with the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, serving portions of metro Manila and surrounding areas. The company has faced periodic scrutiny from regulators and lawmakers over service performance relative to contractual obligations.
