Lawmakers cite Corona precedent in VP wealth inquiry case

MANILA – House prosecution panel member and Manila Representative Joel Chua on Saturday highlighted similarities between the 2012 impeachment conviction of Chief Justice Renato Corona and the ongoing wealth allegations facing Vice President Sara Duterte.

Chua's comparison underscores the House panel's position as it examines accusations that the Vice President accumulated substantial unexplained assets. According to expert testimony presented during the inquiry, the disputed wealth could allegedly total P1.5 billion, representing a significant portion of assets that prosecution officials say lack documented sources.

The Corona case, which resulted in the former Chief Justice's conviction on charges related to undisclosed properties and bank accounts, has become a reference point in discussions of accountability for public officials. Chua suggested the precedent established in that proceeding remains relevant to current investigations into government officials' financial disclosures.

The Vice President has previously responded to the wealth allegations, attributing her assets to family businesses and inheritance. The House panel's inquiry continues to examine financial records and documentation related to the disputed assets as the investigation proceeds.
