Lawyers demand murder probe into custodial death, call for federal takeover

The Free Legal Movement (FLM) has urged authorities to launch a murder investigation into a custodial death, expressing doubt over the police's initial findings regarding the cause of death. The organisation contends that forensic evidence, including reported internal injuries sustained by the deceased, warrants a more rigorous criminal inquiry than currently underway.

In a statement, FLM representatives questioned the narrative provided by law enforcement, suggesting that the circumstances of the death merit scrutiny beyond the scope of a standard inquiry. The group has specifically called for the Royal Malaysian Police's federal headquarters at Bukit Aman to take over the probe, arguing that such a sensitive matter requires oversight at the highest level.

The intervention comes as public concern grows over custody-related deaths and the transparency of police investigations into such incidents. FLM's call for escalation reflects broader demands for independent scrutiny of deaths occurring under state detention.

The police have not yet responded to the allegations. The matter remains under investigation, though the scope and direction of the probe may depend on the authorities' response to the legal group's demands.
