Lean tomato supplies drive prices higher in Andhra Pradesh

Tomato supplies at Madanapalle's wholesale market have plummeted to critical levels, with just 62 tonnes arriving on Wednesday compared to the typical 1,300 tonnes daily during peak season. The sharp decline in arrivals is expected to keep prices elevated through the upcoming festive season, when demand for vegetables traditionally surges across India.

Madanapalle market, which functions as Asia's largest tomato trading hub, typically handles substantial volumes that supply consumers and retailers across the region. The current supply shortage represents a dramatic contraction, with current arrivals representing less than five percent of normal daily intake.

Traders in the market anticipate that festive season demand for Dasara and Diwali celebrations will further strain available supplies, preventing any meaningful price relief in the near term. The combination of reduced arrivals and increased seasonal demand is likely to keep tomato prices at elevated levels throughout the coming weeks.
