Left Front mobilises coastal voters against UDF maritime corridor plan

The Left Democratic Front has intensified its outreach to coastal communities, warning of potential large-scale displacement should the opposition United Democratic Front's proposed maritime corridor be implemented. The LDF's campaign focuses on the risks to fishermen and coastal populations who depend on traditional access to fishing grounds and maritime resources.

Key concerns raised by the LDF include restricted coastline access, loss of homes, and the erosion of traditional fishing livelihoods if the high-value economic corridor proceeds as planned. The movement seeks to galvanise support among fishing communities by highlighting the social costs of the infrastructure development.

The proposed UDF maritime corridor is billed as an economic initiative aimed at leveraging coastal resources for commercial development. However, the LDF contends that such projects historically prioritise commercial interests over the welfare and land rights of local fishing populations.

The campaign represents a significant political mobilisation around livelihood and land rights issues, with the LDF positioning itself as a defender of coastal communities' interests against what it characterises as development that would benefit external investors at the expense of traditional maritime communities.
