Left parties, Congress unite behind Venkateswara Rao for VMC mayor

The Congress has withdrawn from the mayoral race for the Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation following an appeal by former IPS officer Venkateswara Rao, clearing the path for opposition unity in the civic body elections. The decision reflects an attempt by anti-incumbency forces to consolidate their challenge to the ruling dispensation.

Venkateswara Rao's candidature has secured backing from both the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), signaling coordinated opposition efforts ahead of the municipal polls. The former police officer's appeal to the Congress to support his mayoral bid proved persuasive enough for the party to reconsider its electoral strategy in the port city.

Meanwhile, the CPI and CPI(M) have reached a formal understanding regarding seat allocation for the corporation elections, finalizing which candidacies each party will contest. The arrangement aims to prevent anti-Left consolidation through multi-cornered contests and maximize the opposition's combined strength in the civic body.

The electoral adjustments underscore the evolving dynamics in Visakhapatnam's municipal politics, where traditional rival parties are attempting to present a unified front. Such alliances remain crucial in municipal elections across India, where fragmented opposition votes can hand incumbents comfortable victories despite voter discontent.
