The CPI(M), CPI and CPI(ML) Liberation have lodged complaints alleging systematic removal and vandalism of their literature stalls positioned near Durga Puja pandals in multiple locations across West Bengal. The incidents, reported during the festival season, have prompted concerns about freedom of expression during public gatherings in the state.
According to the parties, book stalls displaying communist literature and ideological materials were either forcibly dismantled or had their contents damaged across several districts. The alleged incidents coincide with heightened political activity during the Durga Puja festivities, when public spaces see increased foot traffic and community engagement.
West Bengal Finance Minister and other state officials have publicly condemned the reported vandalism, characterizing it as an attack on democratic principles and the right to free expression. The condemnation has drawn support from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which has similarly denounced the incidents as unacceptable interference with civic freedoms.
The allegations underscore ongoing tensions surrounding political expression and access to public spaces during major cultural events in West Bengal. Authorities have been called upon to ensure protection for all ideological groups seeking to engage with the public during festival seasons.
