Legal profession demands courage and commitment, Chief Justice tells law graduates

The Chief Justice of India on Friday cautioned law graduates that the legal profession demands more than academic excellence, calling for commitment to tackle complex societal issues facing the nation.

Addressing the 34th annual convocation of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), the Chief Justice underscored that legal education must transcend classroom learning and equip practitioners to engage meaningfully with India's diverse communities and their needs.

"The legal profession is not for the faint of heart," the Chief Justice told graduates, emphasizing that lawyers must be prepared to navigate intricate real-world scenarios beyond the scope of traditional curricula. The judiciary's head highlighted the critical role of the legal fraternity in upholding constitutional values and serving as custodians of justice.

The convocation remarks reflect growing concerns among India's judicial leadership about ensuring that law schools produce practitioners capable of addressing contemporary challenges—from access to justice for marginalized communities to navigating emerging legal frontiers in technology and environmental law.

The National Law School, established in Bengaluru, is among India's premier legal institutions and has produced generations of judges, advocates, and legal scholars who have shaped the nation's jurisprudence.
