Leisure World Water Parks (Pvt) Ltd, operating at Kaluaggala in Hanwella, has been penalized by the courts following legal action initiated by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) for pricing violations. The company admitted guilt to charges of retailing bottled drinking water at rates exceeding the government-stipulated Maximum Retail Price (MRP).
The Colombo District Court imposed a fine of Rs. 500,000 against the amusement park operator. The case was pursued after Investigation Officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority conducted an inspection at the venue and identified instances of non-compliance with prescribed pricing regulations.
The enforcement action underscores ongoing regulatory efforts to protect consumers from unfair pricing practices, particularly at leisure and entertainment venues where captive customer bases may face limited purchasing alternatives. The Consumer Affairs Authority continues to monitor commercial establishments across the country to ensure adherence to maximum retail price directives set for essential consumer goods, including bottled water.
