Leopard attacks force Chittoor villagers indoors after territorial clash

Villagers in Chittoor district are living under an informal curfew as two leopards continue to pose an escalating threat to human life and property. The big cats, believed to be survivors of a violent territorial confrontation involving three leopards, have adapted to human settlements and grown increasingly bold in their interactions with residents.

The leopards have demonstrated little fear of humans in recent weeks. They killed a pet dog belonging to a village resident, attacked a blacksmith who was riding his motorcycle, and deterred power department linemen from conducting essential night repairs. The incidents have created an atmosphere of fear across multiple villages in the district.

The most visible impact has been on daily life. Residents have been forced to abandon the common practice of sleeping on terraces during summer months, confining themselves indoors after dark. This restriction has persisted for approximately three months as authorities struggle to contain the situation. The attacks have not been limited to isolated incidents but represent an established pattern of aggressive behaviour.

Local officials have not yet announced concrete measures to address the crisis or relocate the animals. Meanwhile, villagers remain vigilant, with many organized into informal watch groups to protect their families and livestock from further attacks. Experts suggest the leopards may have lost their natural prey due to habitat disruption, driving them to seek food in populated areas.
