Leverage space-tech startups for major ISRO projects: Nair

G. Madhavan Nair, who headed the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) until 2009, has urged the space agency to tap the capabilities of homegrown space-technology startups for its major initiatives. Speaking on the need to bolster India's space sector, Nair emphasised that the focus should be on fostering collaboration rather than cultivating unhealthy competition between ISRO and private enterprises.

The former ISRO chief's remarks come as India's space technology ecosystem has witnessed significant growth, with multiple startups developing innovative solutions in satellite communications, launch services, and related technologies. Nair's suggestion points to the potential of these emerging companies to complement ISRO's efforts in executing large-scale space programmes.

Nair highlighted that a cooperative environment would enable better utilisation of resources and expertise across the sector. Rather than viewing startups as competitors, he advocated treating them as partners capable of contributing specialised capabilities to national space projects. This approach, he suggested, could accelerate India's progress in space exploration and commercial space activities.

The remarks underscore ongoing discussions within India's space industry about the optimal balance between ISRO's institutional role and the growing participation of private players in the sector. As India seeks to expand its presence in global space markets and pursue ambitious domestic programmes, integrating startup capabilities could provide additional flexibility and innovation to the national effort.
