Lightning damage forces LRT-2 into limited operations

MANILA — The Light Rail Transit Authority announced Tuesday that LRT-2 is operating on a limited basis following weather-related damage to the rail line's infrastructure. A lightning strike at Antipolo Station severed a catenary wire, prompting the temporary service restrictions, the LRTA said in an advisory. The catenary system supplies power to the trains and is essential for normal operations across the line.

Train movements are now restricted to service between Recto Station and Santolan Station in both directions, the LRTA confirmed. Passengers traveling beyond this corridor will need to seek alternative transportation options. The authority did not specify the duration of the service limitations or provide an estimated timeline for full operations to resume.

The LRTA has not disclosed whether the lightning strike caused additional damage beyond the severed catenary wire. Repair crews were expected to assess the extent of the damage and work toward restoring full service. The incident marks another disruption to Metro Manila's rail network, which regularly experiences weather-related challenges during the rainy season.
