Lightning strikes cause widespread damage across Ernakulam as monsoon arrives

Multiple lightning strikes struck Ernakulam district over recent days, leaving a trail of destruction across several localities. At Palayikkunnu in Vengola, lightning damaged at least 10 residential houses, while a young girl sustained burn injuries in a separate strike. The incidents underscore the mounting risks posed by electrical storms during the monsoon transition period.

The damage extended to religious and civic infrastructure in the area. A mosque minaret at Karumalloor was struck and damaged by lightning, while geological instability triggered by heavy rainfall caused a portion of land to cave in at Vengola. Authorities have not yet released a comprehensive assessment of the total damage or details on relief measures.

The northeast monsoon typically brings intensified rainfall and atmospheric activity to Kerala from October onwards. Weather officials have advised residents in vulnerable areas to exercise caution during thunderstorms and seek shelter in sturdy structures. Meteorological data suggests the current spell reflects typical monsoon weather patterns, though residents remain concerned about the frequency and intensity of recent strikes in the district.
