Lion struck by train in Gujarat; search operation launched

A lion was hit by a goods train traveling between Pipaavav and Dhasaa in Gujarat's Amreli district on Wednesday, prompting authorities to initiate a major search operation. The incident occurred in the Lathi taluka area near the Lilia-Damnagar railway section when two lions were reportedly crossing the railway tracks.

Following the collision, forest department personnel discovered the lion's severed tail and hair scattered on the railway tracks, indicating the animal sustained significant injuries. Despite the severity of the impact, the wounded lion managed to escape the immediate vicinity.

Based on witness reports suggesting the injured big cat had moved toward nearby agricultural fields, the forest department has deployed teams to comb the surrounding areas. Officials are working to locate and assess the condition of the wounded animal, with particular concern given to its proximity to inhabited regions.

The incident highlights the ongoing conflict between wildlife and railway infrastructure in forested regions of Gujarat, where lion corridors frequently intersect with transportation routes. Forest authorities continue their search and rescue efforts to prevent any further incidents and ensure public safety in the area.
