Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevicius has expressed readiness to bear the financial costs of establishing a permanent US military base on Lithuanian territory, marking an escalation in the country's defence commitments.
Since 2019, Lithuania has hosted a rotating US battalion as part of NATO's eastern flank reinforcement efforts. The Baltic nation, which shares a border with Russia and Belarus, has long sought a more enduring American military presence to bolster its security posture.
Simultaneously, Lithuania's parliament is deliberating changes to its constitution that would remove existing prohibitions on stationing nuclear weapons within the country. The proposed legislative move has drawn swift condemnation from Russia, which has characterised it as destabilising and indicative of escalating tensions in the region.
The Lithuanian government's push for deeper military integration with the United States reflects broader Baltic anxieties following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and ongoing concerns about regional security dynamics. By offering financial support for a permanent base and exploring nuclear capabilities, Lithuania is signalling its determination to enhance its defensive capabilities and NATO commitment.
