LNG flows through Strait of Hormuz surge to record levels
Liquefied natural gas shipments via the critical Strait of Hormuz reached their highest volume since geopolitical tensions escalated in the region, with 19 cargoes transiting the waterway in September alone.

A total of 19 liquefied natural gas cargoes passed through the Strait of Hormuz during September, marking the strongest monthly throughput since the onset of heightened US-Iran tensions, according to energy analytics firm S&P Global Energy.
The surge was driven primarily by Qatari exports, which accounted for 13 of the cargoes, while the United Arab Emirates contributed six shipments. The combined volumes underscore the critical importance of the narrow waterway to global energy markets, as the strait remains the primary export route for LNG producers in the Middle East serving customers worldwide.
The Strait of Hormuz handles approximately one-third of globally traded LNG, making it a vital chokepoint for energy security. Despite ongoing regional tensions, shipping activity has remained largely consistent, with producers continuing to maintain export operations through the strategically significant passage.
The September figures demonstrate resilience in energy supply chains amid broader geopolitical uncertainties affecting the region. Both Qatar and the UAE have maintained stable production and export schedules, ensuring continued availability of LNG to international markets including India and other Asian economies heavily dependent on imported natural gas.
