CEBU CITY — Local government units are best positioned to provide fare relief for commuters facing higher public transport costs in their respective areas, according to Philippine Councilors League national president Benjie Abalos.
Abalos emphasized that municipalities and cities have the proximity and resources to effectively address the impact of fare hikes on ordinary commuters. He made the statement while addressing concerns at the PCL-Zamboanga del Norte Chapter Assembly held in Cebu City on Tuesday.
The remarks come as transport operators have sought fare increases to offset rising fuel and operational costs. Abalos' position suggests that local government units should take a leading role in mitigation strategies rather than relying solely on national-level interventions.
