LOHUM eyes 30,000 tonnes lithium carbonate from Zimbabwe mines

LOHUM, a critical minerals company focused on battery materials, has begun extraction operations across ten spodumene-bearing blocks in Zimbabwe as it ramps up production capacity. The mining initiative is part of the company's broader strategy to establish a vertically integrated supply chain for lithium carbonate, a key component in battery manufacturing.

The company has set an ambitious production target of 30,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate annually from its Zimbabwean assets. This output is expected to position LOHUM as a significant player in meeting growing regional demand for battery materials as India and South Asia accelerate the transition to electric vehicles and renewable energy storage.

Central to LOHUM's expansion plans is the establishment of refining and processing facilities in India. By processing the mined spodumene concentrate domestically, the company aims to create a comprehensive battery-materials supply chain that captures multiple value-addition stages within the region.

The move reflects broader regional efforts to develop domestic battery manufacturing capacity and reduce reliance on imports for critical minerals essential to the clean energy transition. As demand for lithium-ion batteries continues to surge across India and neighbouring markets, securing reliable supply sources has emerged as a strategic priority for battery and electric vehicle manufacturers.
