Metropolitan Police arrested 48 people during protests in central London on Saturday as supporters of Palestine Action took to the streets in defiance of the organization's proscription under UK terrorism legislation. Simultaneous demonstrations were held in Edinburgh, with hundreds of activists assembling to voice opposition to the group's outlawed designation.
The demonstrations coincide with Palestine Action's upcoming Supreme Court appeal challenging the ban imposed by the British government. The group, which has staged direct action campaigns targeting Israeli-linked operations and facilities, was proscribed in November 2021 under the Terrorism Act 2000.
Police said those arrested faced various charges related to public order offenses and breaches of conditions imposed on the gatherings. Organizers of the protest maintained that the proscription violates rights to freedom of expression and assembly, with supporters arguing that the ban effectively criminalizes legitimate political activism.
The appeal represents a significant legal test of the government's powers to designate protest movements as terrorist organizations. Palestine Action maintains it operates within the law and rejects characterizations linking its activities to terrorism, asserting instead that its campaigns constitute protected forms of political speech and civil disobedience.
