Long-awaited Vembanad Lake bridge nears completion after decade of work

A major infrastructure project spanning a decade is nearing completion as authorities put finishing touches to the Nerekadavu-Makkekadavu bridge across Vembanad Lake in Kerala. The 800-metre crossing links Udayanapuram grama panchayat in Kottayam district with Thaikkattussery panchayat in neighbouring Alappuzha district, creating a vital transport link between the two regions.

The bridge's main structure has been fully constructed, clearing the way for opening to public traffic in the coming weeks. Workers are currently focused on completing approach roads on both sides of the bridge and constructing retaining walls to ensure structural integrity and road safety.

The long-delayed project is expected to significantly reduce travel time between communities on either side of the lake while boosting local economic connectivity. The bridge has been a priority for residents who previously relied on lengthy alternative routes or water-based transport to cross the lake.

Official sources indicated that work on auxiliary infrastructure is progressing on schedule, with opening ceremonies likely to follow once all safety inspections and final touches are completed.
