Looting erupts as LPU campus protest over alleged assault turns violent

A protest at Lovely Professional University's campus in Punjab escalated into violence and organised looting on Tuesday, as students reacted to allegations of sexual assault involving a female student. What began as a demonstration over the reported incident quickly spiralled into destruction and theft, with groups of individuals exploiting the chaos for criminal gain.

Rioters targeted Uni Mall located within the campus premises, breaking through storefronts and stealing laptops, mobile phones, gaming consoles including PS5 units, clothing, and food items. Security personnel struggled to contain the crowds as multiple shops were systematically ransacked. The shopping complex sustained significant damage, with shattered glass and empty shelves left in the wake of the looting.

Beyond the mall, incidents of vandalism and arson were reported across the campus. University infrastructure and student facilities were damaged during the disorder. Security teams and campus authorities were overwhelmed by the scale and speed of the destruction.

Police have launched an investigation into both the original allegations and the subsequent looting and property damage. Authorities are working to identify individuals involved in the criminal activity. The incident has raised concerns about campus security protocols and the university's capacity to manage student unrest.
