MANILA — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board is evaluating the establishment of dedicated bus routes between Antipolo City and Manila to address recurring congestion on the Light Rail Transit Line 2, according to board officials.

The proposed routes would operate between Antipolo and Recto Avenue, offering commuters an alternative when LRT-2 experiences peak-hour crowding or unscheduled service interruptions. The study comes as the aging light rail line continues to struggle with capacity constraints during rush periods.

The LTFRB initiative seeks to distribute passenger load across multiple transport modes and reduce overdependence on the single rail corridor, which serves thousands of residents traveling between the eastern city and central Manila daily. By designating specific bus routes for this purpose, the board hopes to create a more predictable and reliable commuting option.

The special routes would operate with designated stops and schedules, distinguishing them from regular bus services. Officials are examining operational frameworks, required fleet size, and fare structures as part of the planning process.

The LRT-2 has faced persistent capacity challenges, with trains regularly operating at full capacity during peak hours. The proposed bus corridor represents one of several measures transport authorities are considering to enhance regional mobility and reduce pressure on the rail system.
