MANILA — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) is seeking an exemption from the Commission on Elections' ban on government subsidy programs, citing the need to continue critical support for transport drivers and commuters.
The regulatory agency has specifically requested relief for its fuel subsidy program for public transport operators and the Edsa busway "Libreng Sakay" free ride initiative, according to LTFRB acting Chair Greg Pua.
The request comes as the Comelec enforces spending restrictions during the election period designed to ensure a level playing field for candidates and prevent the use of government resources for political advantage.
The LTFRB's appeal highlights the tension between electoral regulations and the continuity of essential public transportation services, particularly those benefiting lower-income commuters and transport workers who depend on government assistance to maintain operations and affordable fares.
The outcome of the Comelec's review of the exemption request may determine whether the transport programs continue uninterrupted during the election period or face temporary suspension.
