LTFRB warns PUV operators against refusing mandated fare discounts

MANILA — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has cautioned operators and drivers of public utility vehicles that non-compliance with mandatory fare discount policies could result in administrative penalties.

The regulatory body reiterated that a 20 percent fare reduction is mandated for three categories of passengers: senior citizens, students, and persons with disabilities. This discount requirement applies across various public transportation modes operating under LTFRB jurisdiction.

The warning comes as the agency seeks to ensure that vulnerable sectors of the traveling public receive the benefits prescribed by law. Operators and drivers found refusing or failing to grant these discounts face potential sanctions, including fines and possible suspension of their operating franchises.

Passengers entitled to the discounts are typically required to present valid identification, such as senior citizen cards, student identification, or disability certificates, to qualify for the reduced fares. The LTFRB urged operators to implement proper training for their personnel to facilitate smooth transactions and prevent disputes with entitled passengers.

The agency emphasized that compliance with fare discount regulations is a fundamental obligation for all franchised public transportation providers operating in the Philippines.
