KUALA LUMPUR — Lumut Naval Shipyard Sdn Bhd (Lunas) has maintained its target to deliver the first littoral combat ship (LCS) to the Royal Malaysian Navy by April 2027, according to statements from the shipyard management.
The vessel represents a significant step in Malaysia's efforts to strengthen its naval capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign military procurement. The project forms part of a broader defence modernisation initiative aimed at enhancing the country's maritime security posture in regional waters.
Lunas has undertaken extensive preparations to meet the ambitious timeline, including workforce development, infrastructure upgrades, and coordination with local and international technology partners involved in the construction programme.
The littoral combat ship project is expected to generate substantial economic benefits through job creation and the development of domestic shipbuilding expertise. The vessel's design incorporates advanced maritime technologies tailored to operational requirements in Southeast Asian waters.
The Royal Malaysian Navy has emphasised the strategic importance of the LCS acquisition in addressing evolving security challenges and maintaining maritime domain awareness across Malaysia's extensive exclusive economic zone.
