A man who fled a Tokyo luxury goods shop with a high-end Audemars Piguet watch worth approximately 46 million yen has returned the stolen item by courier, accompanied by a handwritten letter of apology.

The watch, valued at around US$291,300, was taken after the suspect tried it on at the retail location in Japan's capital. Rather than face legal consequences, the individual chose to send the timepiece back through a courier service days after the theft.
The return package included a handwritten apology note, indicating the thief's apparent remorse over the incident. Shop staff confirmed receipt of the watch and verified its condition upon arrival, finding no damage to the luxury item.
The recovery of the high-value timepiece marked an unusual conclusion to the theft, as such incidents typically result in prolonged investigations and recovery efforts. The Audemars Piguet brand is renowned for its precision engineering and exclusivity, with models often commanding prices in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Authorities have not disclosed whether the suspect has been identified or if charges will be pursued following the watch's return. The incident highlights both the appeal of luxury goods and the risks retailers face in handling valuable inventory during customer transactions.
