Luxury watch thief returns stolen timepiece with apologetic note
A high-end Audemars Piguet watch valued at US$290,000 has been recovered in Japan after being stolen from a retail store. The luxury timepiece was returned along with an apology note, several days after a man posing as a customer fled with the item still on his wrist.

The theft occurred when an individual entered a Japanese jewellery store and attempted to try on the premium Swiss-made watch under the pretence of being a potential buyer. The suspect managed to leave the premises with the Audemars Piguet still fastened to his wrist, prompting an immediate investigation by local authorities.
Days after the incident, the stolen watch was mysteriously returned to the store. Accompanying the recovered timepiece was a handwritten note expressing remorse for the theft, though details regarding the circumstances of its return remain limited.
The recovery of the luxury item represents a rare conclusion to what could have become a significant loss for the retailer. Audemars Piguet watches, particularly models in the returned watch's category, command premium prices in the global luxury market and are frequently targeted by organised theft rings.
Japanese law enforcement continues to investigate the incident as authorities seek to identify the individual responsible for the initial theft. The case highlights ongoing security challenges faced by high-end retailers in protecting valuable inventory from organised criminals who pose as legitimate customers.
