LWUA prepares water curbs as Super El Niño threat looms

MANILA — The Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) is weighing the implementation of water supply restrictions on non-essential uses as the country braces for the impact of a Super El Niño event forecast to affect the region through early 2027.

The potential measures were discussed during a Senate budget hearing for the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) held on Monday, as government agencies move to mitigate the effects of the climatic phenomenon.

The Super El Niño is expected to create drier conditions across much of the Philippines starting in late December, potentially affecting water availability and agricultural productivity. Water utilities nationwide have begun contingency planning to ensure adequate supplies for essential services and households during the anticipated dry period.

The LWUA has not yet finalized details on the scope or timing of any restrictions, but officials indicated that measures would likely target non-essential water consumption while protecting supplies for domestic and critical industrial use.

The administration is coordinating with the DENR and other agencies to develop a comprehensive response strategy to the expected climatic shifts.
