Lyon defeats Palace as European clubs maintain perfect starts

Lyon claimed three points against Crystal Palace in Wednesday's Europa League fixture, extending their strong start to the competition. The French side's victory was part of a broader successful evening for established European powerhouses competing in the league phase format.

Bayer Leverkusen, Juventus, Benfica and Bournemouth all recorded wins to preserve their perfect records in the new league phase structure. The results underlined the dominance of the continent's traditional elite in the early stages of the revamped Europa League format.

In a separate development, Sunderland mounted a late comeback to secure a positive result, demonstrating the competitive nature of European football this season. The comeback victory added to the evening's drama as clubs fought to maintain momentum in their respective campaigns.

The league phase format represents a significant change to European club competitions, with teams competing in a larger pool of matches before the knockout rounds. Early results suggest established sides are adapting well to the new structure, though surprises may still emerge as the competition progresses.
