MA63 is binding national pledge, not just Sabah-Sarawak issue: Anwar

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated that the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) constitutes a binding national promise that must be upheld across the country, cautioning against viewing it as an issue affecting only Sabah and Sarawak. Speaking in Kuching, Anwar emphasised the agreement's significance as a foundational pact that shapes Malaysia's constitutional framework and federal structure. He stressed that respecting and implementing the terms of MA63 is not merely a regional matter but a responsibility shared by all Malaysians and the federal government. The Prime Minister's remarks underscore the government's commitment to honouring the constitutional provisions and special rights granted to the two East Malaysian states upon federation in 1963. His statement comes as Malaysia continues to address longstanding concerns about the implementation of various MA63 provisions, including matters related to state autonomy, revenue sharing, and constitutional protections. By framing MA63 as a national issue rather than a localised concern, Anwar sought to broaden understanding of the agreement's importance to Malaysia's unity and stability.
