MA63 remains binding framework, says GRS secretary-general

The secretary-general of Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has reaffirmed that the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) continues to serve as the binding framework for the nation's formation, rejecting suggestions that a new compact is needed.

Armizan Moin stated that the obligations and responsibilities enshrined in the historic agreement retain their relevance and must be honoured by all parties. His remarks come as ongoing debates about federalism and state autonomy persist in Malaysian political discourse.

The MA63, signed on 9 July 1963, established the federation of Malaysia and outlined the constitutional relationship between the federal government and the states of Sabah and Sarawak. Proponents of the agreement argue that certain provisions have not been fully implemented, while others contend that the compact remains the foundation upon which Malaysia's constitutional architecture rests.

GRS, which governs Sabah, has positioned itself as a defender of state interests and constitutional provisions. Armizan's statement underscores the coalition's stance that rather than seeking to replace or fundamentally alter the agreement, stakeholders should focus on ensuring its proper implementation and respect for its original terms.
