MACC seeks remand of ex-minister in Tabung Haji hotel probe

PUTRAJAYA — A former government minister presented himself at the Putrajaya Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for remand hearings connected to an investigation into Tabung Haji's acquisition of a hotel property in Saudi Arabia.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) filed for the suspect's remand as part of an ongoing probe into the transaction, which has drawn public scrutiny over concerns regarding the management of funds belonging to the pilgrimage savings scheme.

Tabung Haji, the government agency responsible for managing savings for Malaysian pilgrims undertaking the Hajj, had invested substantially in the overseas property venture. Questions have been raised about the decision-making process and oversight surrounding the investment, which was executed during the period when the former minister held office.

The remand application follows a series of investigations by anti-corruption authorities into high-level financial transactions involving state-linked entities. The MACC has been examining documentation and conducting interviews as part of its inquiry into potential breaches of fiduciary duty and related offences.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about governance and accountability in the management of public and semi-public institutional funds in Malaysia.
