Madhya Pradesh Falls Short on Water Access Target in Nearly Half Districts

More than 40 percent of Madhya Pradesh's districts have failed to achieve adequate tap water coverage under the central government's flagship water supply scheme. Government data reveals 23 of 55 districts remain below the 70 percent coverage benchmark.

The Centre disclosed in a written response to the Rajya Sabha that Madhya Pradesh's progress toward universal water access remains uneven, with nearly half its districts lagging behind targets under the 'Har Ghar Jal' (water in every household) initiative.

The figures, placed on official record through a parliamentary response, show 23 districts across the state have achieved less than 70 percent coverage of potable tap water supply. The data underscores persistent challenges in extending piped water infrastructure to rural and semi-urban areas across the central Indian state.

The 'Har Ghar Jal' scheme, a key component of the national Jal Jeevan Mission, aims to provide safe drinking water through individual household connections. The initiative prioritizes districts and regions with acute water scarcity and inadequate existing infrastructure.

While several districts in Madhya Pradesh have exceeded the 70 percent threshold, the widespread gaps in coverage highlight resource constraints and implementation hurdles. Officials point to terrain challenges, financial limitations, and coordination issues between state and local authorities as factors affecting deployment speed.

The government has committed to accelerating work in underperforming districts through enhanced funding and technical support, though timelines for achieving full coverage remain uncertain across the state.
