Madhya Pradesh forms panel to investigate spurious liquor deaths in Dewas

Authorities in Madhya Pradesh have set up an investigative panel to probe allegations of multiple deaths linked to spurious liquor consumption in Dewas district. According to reports from local residents, the suspected poisonings occurred between September 27 and October 16, with claims that at least 10 individuals lost their lives under circumstances related to contaminated alcohol.

The formation of the committee represents an official response to growing concerns about illicit liquor distribution in the region. Such incidents have periodically surfaced across India, with substandard or adulterated alcohol posing severe health risks to consumers, often containing toxic substances including methanol.

The investigative body has been tasked with verifying the death claims, examining circumstances surrounding each incident, and identifying the source of the suspected spurious liquor. Officials have set a 15-day deadline for the panel to complete its preliminary assessment and submit a detailed report.

The move comes as authorities intensify efforts to curb the illegal liquor trade in Madhya Pradesh. State officials have indicated that the investigation will also look into regulatory gaps that may have allowed contaminated alcohol to circulate in Dewas district.
