Madhya Pradesh traders stage UPI protest, demand MDR charge rollback

Traders and retailers in Madhya Pradesh's major commercial hubs staged a coordinated demonstration against digital payment levies, effectively shutting down UPI acceptance at thousands of outlets. In Bhopal and Indore, shop owners draped QR code stickers and payment confirmation soundboxes in black cloth, signalling their opposition to existing merchant discount rate (MDR) structures.

The protest action, which saw businesses actively discouraging digital payments and requesting cash transactions instead, reflects growing frustration within the retail sector over transaction costs. Traders argue that MDR charges imposed on UPI payments erode their profit margins, particularly affecting small merchants operating on thin margins.

The demonstration underscores a wider debate in India's payments ecosystem regarding the sustainability of digital transaction costs. While digital payment adoption has expanded significantly across tier-two and tier-three cities, merchant concerns about associated charges have periodically sparked organised resistance from trader associations.

The Madhya Pradesh action represents an escalation in the ongoing dispute between the retail sector and payment processors, with merchants seeking complete elimination of MDR charges on UPI platforms.
