The Madras High Court has dismissed as withdrawn a petition challenging the constitutional validity of Tamil Nadu's free bus travel scheme for women. The court, however, has given the petitioner liberty to pursue alternative legal remedies.

A bench of Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan disposed of the petition challenging the 'Vettri Payanam' scheme, which provides fare-free bus travel to women passengers across Tamil Nadu.
While dismissing the case as withdrawn, the court granted the petitioner the option to explore other remedies available under law, should they wish to continue their challenge against the scheme.
The Vettri Payanam scheme, launched by the Tamil Nadu government, has been a flagship welfare initiative aimed at providing affordable mobility to women across the state. The scheme offers free travel on buses operated by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) and other approved operators.
The dismissal comes after the petitioner's legal challenge to the scheme's constitutional validity failed to secure the court's intervention. The judgment preserves the petitioner's right to approach other judicial forums if they wish to pursue the matter further through different legal avenues.
The decision reflects the court's reluctance to intervene in the state's welfare policies, particularly those designed to benefit vulnerable sections of society.
