Madras High Court dismisses petition challenging DMK whip's election victory

The Madras High Court has dismissed a legal challenge to the election of DMK whip E.V. Velu from the Tiruvannamalai constituency in Tamil Nadu. Justice D. Bharatha Chakravarthy ruled in favour of the former Minister by allowing applications to strike off the pleadings and reject the election petition filed against him.
The petition had sought to challenge Velu's electoral victory, but the court found insufficient grounds to proceed with the case. Justice Chakravarthy's order effectively upheld Velu's election to the assembly seat and validated his position as the party whip in the legislature.
The decision comes as a significant relief to the DMK legislator, clearing legal clouds over his electoral mandate. Velu has been an important figure in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party structure, serving as a key legislative coordinator for the party in the assembly.
The dismissal of the election petition reinforces the finality of the 2021 assembly elections in the state, during which the DMK-led alliance swept to power in Tamil Nadu.
