The Madras High Court has dismissed a plea by A. Raja, the former Union Minister, seeking directions to the Central Bureau of Investigation to file certain documents on record in his disproportionate assets case.
Justice G.K. Ilanthiraiyan rejected the plea, declining to intervene in the investigation proceedings being conducted by the CBI. The former minister had sought the court's intervention to compel the investigating agency to place specific documents before the special court designated to hear cases against Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assemblies.
The disproportionate assets case against Raja has been under investigation by the CBI for several years. The special court handling such cases against elected representatives is the appropriate forum for examining the documents and evidence in the matter.
With the high court's dismissal of his plea, Raja's legal remedies in challenging the investigative process have been further curtailed. The case is expected to proceed through the normal course of investigation and prosecution before the special court.
The decision underscores the judiciary's approach of allowing investigating agencies to proceed with their work without unnecessary judicial intervention in the investigative stage of such cases.
