Magnitude 5 quake strikes Occidental Mindoro; no major damage reported

The earthquake struck at 9:34 a.m. and was centered at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath Occidental Mindoro, according to seismological data. The strongest ground shaking, measured at Intensity IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, was reported in the towns of Mamburao and Sablayan, where residents experienced noticeable movement of structures and hanging objects.

Phivolcs recorded no initial reports of significant structural damage or casualties from the temblor. Intensity IV earthquakes typically cause moderate shaking that residents can feel clearly, though major damage to buildings is uncommon unless structures are poorly constructed or located near the epicenter.

The agency continues to monitor seismic activity in the region. Occidental Mindoro lies along active fault lines and is part of the Philippines' seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, making periodic earthquakes a regular occurrence in the province.

Residents were advised to remain alert for any aftershocks and to follow standard earthquake safety protocols if additional tremors are felt.
