COTABATO CITY — Mayor Akmad "Mitra" Ampatuan Sr. of Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao del Sur, issued a public challenge Monday to his nephew, urging him to surrender and face charges stemming from a rocket-propelled grenade attack conducted earlier this year.
The mayor's statement came as authorities continued investigating the January incident. In his appeal, Ampatuan called on his relative to step forward and address the allegations in court, signaling his willingness to pursue the case regardless of family ties.
"My son, come out and surrender; face the cases against you," the mayor stated, adding that the legal proceedings would determine the outcome. "We will see you in court."
The attack has drawn attention to security concerns in Maguindanao del Sur, a region that has experienced periodic instances of armed conflict. The public challenge by Ampatuan underscores the seriousness with which authorities are treating the matter, despite the familial relationship involved.
