Maharashtra declares drought across 265 talukas as rainfall deficit deepens

Maharashtra's government formally declared drought across 265 talukas spanning 32 districts on Saturday, covering approximately 74 per cent of the state's geographical area. The declaration came after a government resolution issued Friday evening acknowledged severe rainfall deficits across multiple regions.

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division has emerged as the most severely affected area, with 74 talukas classified as drought-stricken. The government has initiated several immediate relief measures to support farmers, including restructuring of crop loans and land revenue concessions. Power bill subsidies have also been announced as part of the relief package.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed district collectors to commence crop-damage assessments without delay. The administration stated that a separate government resolution outlining financial assistance for crop losses would be issued following prescribed procedures. Officials emphasized that farmers remain central to the government's relief response efforts.

The drought declaration comes as the state grapples with significant water shortages affecting agricultural output. The government's multi-pronged approach aims to provide immediate financial relief while comprehensive assessments of crop losses are completed across the affected talukas.
