Maharashtra election body flags nearly 97% of voters for verification anomalies

The Maharashtra State Election Commission has initiated a comprehensive verification process after flagging 12.22 million electors out of 77.2 million names retained on the draft supplementary roll following enumeration. The flagged entries account for approximately 97.16 percent of the remaining draft roll and represent cases requiring detailed scrutiny for potential anomalies and mapping inconsistencies.

Election officials are conducting ground-level verification to address the flagged entries before preparing the final electoral roll. The verification process aims to ensure accuracy in voter registration and eliminate duplicate entries, incomplete addresses, and other discrepancies that could affect the electoral process.

The large number of flagged entries underscores the complexity of maintaining an accurate electoral database across Maharashtra, India's second-most populous state. Systematic verification of voter details is essential to prevent fraudulent registrations and ensure that only eligible citizens are included in the final roll.

State election authorities have not announced a specific timeline for completing the verification process and publishing the final electoral roll. Once verification is complete, eligible citizens will have an opportunity to file objections or seek inclusion in the roll during the prescribed objection period.
