Maharashtra FDA seizes banned tobacco, suspect food products worth ₹3.11 crore

The Food and Drug Administration's regional teams intensified inspections across Maharashtra, resulting in the seizure of banned tobacco products and suspect food items collectively worth ₹3.11 crore. The operation, spanning multiple districts including Mumbai and Jalna, reflects renewed efforts to curb the distribution of prohibited commodities in the state.

Authorities recovered contraband materials, including confiscated vehicles and equipment, with seized goods in Mumbai and Jalna alone valued at ₹93.42 lakh. The recovered items are now under FDA custody pending legal proceedings.

The enforcement drive underscores persistent challenges in regulating illicit tobacco trade and ensuring food safety standards across Maharashtra. Officials said the operation targeted both organised distribution networks and retail outlets suspected of stocking banned or substandard products. Further investigations are underway to identify supply chains and traders involved in the illegal operations.

The FDA has appealed to consumers to report suspicious products and urged retailers to stock only certified, legally approved items. State authorities have indicated they will sustain enforcement activities to protect public health and eliminate banned commodities from the marketplace.
