Maharashtra FDA seizes over 6 lakh kg of suspect food during Ganeshotsav

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration intensified its food safety surveillance between September 1 and 23, conducting inspections across 3,068 retail and food service establishments statewide. The operation, timed to coincide with the popular Ganeshotsav festival when food consumption peaks, focused on ensuring consumer safety during large-scale public gatherings and household celebrations.

Inspection teams uncovered significant quantities of food products suspected of adulteration or substandard quality during the enforcement drive. The seized stock, comprising various food items, was valued at approximately ₹9.76 crore, reflecting the scale of non-compliance discovered across Maharashtra's food supply chain.

The FDA's coordinated action underscores growing concerns over food safety standards during festival seasons when vendors often increase production and distribution to meet heightened demand. Authorities emphasized that the drive aimed to protect public health and prevent foodborne illnesses during celebrations when vulnerable populations, including children and elderly persons, consume large quantities of diverse food items.

The enforcement action forms part of the state's broader food safety initiatives designed to maintain standards across formal and informal food sectors.
