Maharashtra FDA shuts eight Mumbai eateries, seizes 38 tonnes of food

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cracked down on food safety violations across Maharashtra, suspending operations at eight eateries in Mumbai and seizing 38 tonnes of food stock following comprehensive inspections of food service establishments in the state.

The regulatory action was triggered by widespread violations discovered during routine inspections, including unhygienic kitchen conditions and defective drainage systems. Inspectors also documented rusted storage racks and utensils, improper food handling procedures such as mixing returned bread with fresh inventory, and incomplete temperature maintenance records at the establishments.

Additionally, the FDA found that employees at these facilities were operating without valid medical certificates, a mandatory requirement under food safety regulations. Inspectors also identified the use of unauthorised food colours and additives in confectionery items, posing potential health risks to consumers.

The enforcement action underscores the FDA's ongoing commitment to maintaining food safety standards across the state. Authorities have stated that further inspections will continue across Maharashtra's food service sector to ensure compliance with established health and hygiene protocols.
