Maharashtra food regulator intensifies crackdown with mass inspections, seizures

Maharashtra's food safety regulator has intensified its enforcement operations, conducting 12,083 inspections and seizing food items worth ₹67.2 crore between June and August. The comprehensive crackdown reflects the FDA's commitment to strengthening food safety standards across the state and protecting consumers from substandard products.
During the three-month enforcement period, the regulatory body issued 5,269 improvement notices to food businesses found operating below prescribed standards. The agency suspended 603 operating licences and arrested 875 individuals for serious violations, signalling a zero-tolerance approach to food safety breaches.
The enforcement drive targeted multiple segments of the food industry, including manufacturing units, distribution networks, and retail establishments. The seizures encompassed contaminated, adulterated, and misbranded food products that posed potential health risks to consumers.
The action underscores the FDA's expanded monitoring capabilities and resource deployment. Officials have indicated that such periodic enforcement cycles will continue to ensure compliance with food safety regulations across manufacturing, storage, and retail operations throughout Maharashtra.
