Maharashtra launches drought relief panel, allocates ₹292 crore for farmers

The Maharashtra government has set up a specialized panel to coordinate drought mitigation efforts across the state, responding to deficient rainfall that impacted agricultural regions during the current Kharif cycle. The decision follows an assessment under the Trigger-1 framework, which identified specific talukas requiring immediate intervention.

The state has sanctioned ₹291.91 crore in relief funds targeted at supporting farmers in drought-affected areas. The financial package aims to provide immediate assistance to agricultural communities facing moisture stress and reduced crop prospects due to below-normal precipitation.

The drought declarations were formalized after preliminary Kharif season assessments confirmed rainfall deficits in designated talukas. The Trigger-1 evaluation mechanism, used to identify areas requiring drought relief, formed the basis for the government's decision to activate support measures.

The newly constituted panel will oversee the implementation of mitigation strategies, including fund disbursement and coordination between state departments. Officials indicate that the measures are designed to provide immediate relief while monitoring weather patterns for the remainder of the agricultural season.

Maharashtra has a history of drought-related challenges, particularly in its eastern and central regions. The current relief initiative reflects the state government's focus on providing timely support to farming communities during periods of agricultural stress.
